Nose Piercing Means Trouble for Eighth Grader

An eight grader with a nose piercingwon a temporary reprieve from suspension after taking her case to the school board.

"It takes a lot of courage for an adult to stand up for what they believe in," board president Patty Merrill told 14-year-old Elizabeth Estrada at Tuesday night's meeting. "And I think I speak for the entire board by saying that we're proud of you."

Why is it if a kid stands up for something, no matter howmisguided, adults fall all over themselves to praise the kid?

The topper is the girls mother who said she at first "disapproved" when her daughter wanted to get the piercing, but she eventually gave in.

Is that how it's done? Who knew?

-Simply because this demonstrates independent thinking. In a society of conformists, when a child attempts to express themselves in non-violent manner, this always should be encouraged (and yes, praised). How misguided it is, is not for you or any other person to say. That right rests with the parents, and obviously they are not concerned...so back off.

true, but if we are to treat kids with respect, we should not patronize them by not commenting on what we think is misguided or wrong. if you put yourself out there to the public, you must be prepared to take the critisism. .....so there will be no "backing off" here.
